Wrong again...

"The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that President Bush overstepped his authority in ordering military war crimes trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying in a strong rebuke that the trials were illegal under U.S. and international law" (ABC).

The Graham-Levin amendment, which was passed (84-14) in November 2005, cut off detainees’ potential access to the federal courts. However, the case that was brought before the Supreme Court involving Salim Ahmed Hamdan was pending in the system before the Graham-Levin amendment.
----

Did the Supreme Court get it right? No. The detainees at Guantanamo have been afforded rights they should not have. Why were they afforded these rights? Because of the “Geneva Conventions.”

Two things I have to say about the “Geneva Conventions”:

1) Alqaeda doesn’t afford us these rights.

2) If you’re going to cite the Geneva Conventions at least get it right! What part of the Geneva Conventions, in particular Convention III, Article 4 do these idiots not understand? Alqaeda does not and did not follow the criteria:
a) They did not have a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance (or uniform).
b) They did not conduct their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

I sure hope Congress fixes this mess.

Borderline...

Cartoonist Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Treason: "Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States" (U.S. Code 2381).

Grandma for Governor?

“Independent Texas gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn is looking to cash in on a popular campaign slogan from her last campaign, filing a petition to appear on the November ballot as Grandma Strayhorn” (FOX).

Forget Kinky Friedman. He’s got some good one liners and a few bold suggestions but policy wise he’s a liberal. Carol “Grandma” Strayhorn pledges (if elected) to cut property taxes, cut government spending, lower insurance rates, build freeways, and stop illegal immigration. Kinky Friedman has been silent on economic issues, and Gov. Perry has been a miserable failure on illegal immigration.

It could be a three way race with no candidate receiving over 50% of the vote. A democrat will definitely not win, and republicans may be split.

Ignorance of the Senate

"The long-fought Senate immigration bill that opponents say grants amnesty to 10 million illegal aliens is unconstitutional and appears headed for certain demise, Senate Republicans now say.

A key feature of the Senate bill is that it would make illegals pay back taxes before applying for citizenship, a requirement that supporters say will raise billions of dollars in the next decade.

There's just one problem: The U.S. Constitution specifically prohibits revenue-raising legislation from originating in the Senate"
(Washington Times). Courtesy: NPR

Article I, Section 7, Clause 1: “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.”

Sen. Frist’s solution? Attach the bill to a tax bill already out of the House.

Sen. Reid’s solution? Ignore the Constitution.
